Start with operating friction

Look for high-volume work, recurring decisions, long cycle times, preventable rework and tasks that require people to find or interpret information. These are signals, not automatic use cases. Each must be tested against value and feasibility.

Separate automation from intelligence

If a process is stable and rule-based, conventional automation may be cheaper and more reliable. AI becomes useful when the work involves unstructured documents, language, prediction, pattern recognition or context-dependent support.

Evaluate the whole workflow

A model output is not an operating solution. Consider data access, hand-offs, exceptions, approvals, auditability and who remains accountable. Often the real value comes from redesigning the workflow around the capability.

Protect human judgement

High-impact, ambiguous or regulated decisions need explicit oversight. Human-in-the-loop should define when a person reviews, what evidence they see, how disagreement is handled and how outcomes improve the system.

Prioritise measurable value

Rank opportunities by capacity released, cycle-time reduction, quality, risk and customer impact. Begin where value can be observed and the organisation can learn safely.
